Intellectual Property

KARRYAK® Pioneering Sea Kayaks are protected by, and utilise, licences for three patents granted, ten registered designs granted, and two trademarks awarded, stretching across UK, EU, and USA. Our intention is also to make the intellectual property available, via license, to other designers and manufacturers across the whole hand-powered watercraft community, which includes sea kayaks, at realistic rates that benefit all.

Licensing

Having developed and protected these concepts and designs, they are all included and demonstrated in a KARRYAK® Pioneering Sea Kayak. We invite designers and manufacturers to engage with us to license these concepts for inclusion in their hand-powered watercraft (sea kayaks, kayak, canoes, stand up paddle-boards, rowing boats etc). Licensing need not be expensive, and designers and manufacturers would be well advised to engage with us to explore mutual benefit through licensing, rather than seeking to circumvent any of the intellectual property applied in a KARRYAK® Pioneering Sea Kayak.

Joints - Patent No. GB2611879

Joints

The joint design holding the modular sections together is unique, and granted Patent No. GB2611879, and is based on a concept opposite to all other hand powered craft that are sectional or modular.

The patented concept enables both stronger joints and lighter sections by dispersing the load and shock transfer between sections in a divergent manner, as opposed to a convergent manner as in all other hand-powered watercraft.

The patented joint can be applied, via licence, to any hand powered watercraft, including sea kayaks, kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, rowing boats etc and is protected for all these applications.

RUDDER/SKEG - Patent No. GB2611287

Rudder / Skeg

The patent refers to deploying and retracting the KARRYAK® control blade by foot.

The control blade that performs both the skeg and rudder functions is placed where the skeg on a sea kayak is usually found, and controlled entirely by foot, with the deploy, retract and adjust functions being protected.

It is not new that rudders are foot-operated for steering, but the concept of deploying a blade, skeg or rudder, and retracting the same on a hand powered watercraft by foot is new and is the subject of this patent.

Patent No. GB2611287

HATCH - Patent No. GB2611288

Hatches

KARRYAK® hatches are unique and have a patent granted for use on hand powered watercraft, including sea kayaks, in the way they engage and seal by manipulating the protected O ring.

The O ring is deliberately and specifically distorted to enable the hatch lid to be closed onto the rim manually. The O ring then seals once in place so that the hatch lid cannot be removed via a straight pull. Air pressure from inside, or hydraulic suction from outside, cannot push or pull off the hatch lid.

The hatch lid can be removed only by pulling asymmetrically, manually, in the appropriate place and direction, and replaced onto the rim by the opposite action.
